Why people mix them up
The United Kingdom and Ireland are neighbours in the British Isles, and the island of Ireland is shared between them: Northern Ireland belongs to the UK, while the rest of the island is the Republic of Ireland. English is the main everyday language in both, and the two have a long, intertwined history. So people often ask whether Ireland is part of the UK, and where exactly the border runs.
How to tell them apart
- The UK is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland; the Republic of Ireland covers most of the island of Ireland, about five-sixths of it.
- The UK's flag is the Union Jack, a combination of crosses on blue; Ireland's is a vertical tricolour of green, white and orange.
- The capitals are London (UK) and Dublin (Ireland). Dublin faces Great Britain across the Irish Sea.
- Ireland is in the European Union and uses the euro; the UK left the EU in 2020 and uses the pound sterling.
- Ireland has two official languages, Irish and English; the UK has no single official language law, with English dominant and Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and others recognised regionally.
- The UK is the larger country in both area and population.
Memory hook
Ireland is the green island in the west; the UK is the flag made of crosses that also reaches across to grab Ireland's northeast corner.
On the map
Find the two large islands off northwestern Europe. Great Britain, the bigger eastern one, is entirely part of the UK. On the western island, the small northeastern section is Northern Ireland, also part of the UK; everything else on that island is Ireland. If you are tapping the southern or western part of the smaller island, it is Ireland.
